Construction docs detail Stratford Amazon warehouse work - CT Insider

STRATFORD — Amazon is months away from opening a distribution warehouse in Lordship but the planned facility is already bringing money to the town.

Construction permits totaling roughly $95,000 have been issued on behalf of the property owner, Pennsylvania-based Exeter Property Group, for the properties — 500 and 600 Long Beach Blvd. — where the facility is planned.

More money will come to the town once the company moves in and starts paying taxes on the equipment it moves into the facility.

The permits say some $7.5 million worth of renovations are in the works to prep the Lordship properties for the online retailing giant.

More than 120 pages of construction documents filed with the town offer some more details about the facility.

According to the plans, the 78,915-square-foot building at 600 Long Beach Blvd. would be used as a warehouse, while 500 Long Beach Blvd. would be used mostly for parking, with a total of 220 van parking spaces.

“The proposed facility is being designed for a package delivery service,” the plans filed with the town say. “It is anticipated that the facility will have two shifts working days and evenings. There may be a third shift added at peak season.”

Packages for delivery to local neighborhoods will be unloaded from tractor trailers, sorted and then loaded into vans for delivery to customers.

The plans call for 97 parking spaces for cars and 26 spaces for vans at 600 Long Beach Blvd.

Blueprints for the renovations show a break room with space for more than 150 people, space for lockers and training, a conference room, a small game room, a mother’s room and a “contemplation room.”

The deal was announced last year.

Exactly when the facility will open — and the specific number of jobs the e-commerce behemoth will bring there — remains to be seen.

Company officials say they plan to open at some point this year.

“The Delivery Station is expected to open in 2020 and will employ hundreds of associates, making at least $15 per hour,” Shone Jemmott, an Amazon spokesperson, said in an email.

In addition to warehouse jobs at the property, the facility is expected to be a hub for entrepreneurs to manage delivery routes — and hire others as delivery drivers as part of Amazon’s “Last Mile team” bringing packages from the distribution facility to customers’ addresses.

Some of the jobs, mostly management, were advertised months ago. The company is expected to do another hiring push in the months leading up to opening, it said.
