An accomplished academic, author and artist has been identified as the woman who was run over and killed in downtown Minneapolis while crossing the street with her husband.
Yvonne S. Palka, 81, of Maple Grove, died on Nov. 30 at HCMC, three weeks after a car hit her and husband Johnny Palka late in the afternoon at 5th Avenue and N. 2nd Street, according to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office and police.
Police said the Palkas were walking in a non-marked crosswalk at the Warehouse District intersection. The motorist showed no signs of impairment and remained on the scene. Police are so far declining to identify the driver as the investigation continues.
A family friend said on Facebook that 80-year-old Johnny Palka suffered a broken ankle.
Yvonne Palka's case is the state's 19th traffic-related death for a pedestrian just since October and the 46th so far this year, according to preliminary data from the Department of Public Safety.
There has only been one year dating back to 2004 when there have been more. That's when there were 60 in 2016.
Yvonne Palka's online obituary outlined a life of far-flung travel, intellect and literary talent. After college, she did research at Baylor University Medical School in Houston, taught at the University of Washington and then Antioch University in the Seattle area. The Palkas also had two one-year stints in India, and they were married there during that first extended visit.
She later turned to writing and illustration, in particular telling stories about dragons. At the time of her death, Palka was working on "Sami the Snow Dragon." Also, her paintings have been exhibited in galleries and shows.
